Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag 2020

Untitled_Panorama1

Can you believe it is that time of the year already? I’ve seen this tag floating around again recently and I had to double check the calendar to make sure I was seeing it right. I haven’t had the most successful book year but I thought I’d grab Becky so we can take part in the annual Mid Year Freak Out book tag for you!

What is the best book that you’ve read so far in 2020?
A: I’ve read and loved a few books this year but as for my favourite 2020 release so far, I’d have to choose The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. We follow a group of women, who after the collective death of their husbands during a storm, are forced to live alongside a priest who’s goal it is is to find and kill witches. Atmospheric, hard-hitting and featuring a beautiful f/f romance.

B: This is such a hard question as I’ve read so many good books this year! Some favourites were A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson, House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas, and I’ve also recently fallen in love with the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy.

What has been your favourite sequel of the first half of the year?
A: I have always been really bad at reading sequels, even if I loved the first book so it wasn’t released this year but my favourite has to be the second book in the Wayward Children series, Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire.

B: I’m going to say probably The Deck of Omens by Christine Lynn Herman!

Is there a new release that you haven’t read yet but you’re really excited for?
A: So many but to choose just a few, I’d have to go with All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson, Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert, The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow and Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender.

B: I’m very excited to read A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown, A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow and Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust (which I’ve just started) amongst others!

What is your most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
A: Once again I have a very big list but again to narrow it down I’d have to choose When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole, A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, Each of Us a Desert by Mark Oshiro and Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi.

B: My most anticipated releases are super predictable but they’re The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by Victoria Schwab and A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik!

What is your biggest disappointment so far?
A: For this I’d have to say Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold. It had a few problematic aspects I wrote about here which is a shame because I was so excited for a dark fairytale retelling.

B: I agree with Red Hood, but also, so far, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Honestly I’m just bored with it and have had to put it to one side for a bit!

What is your biggest surprise so far?
A: My biggest surprise would have to be Get a Life, Chloe Brown purely because I hadn’t read much romance before and didn’t think it was my genre. Boy was I wrong.

B: My biggest surprise is definitely the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy! I expected a light hearted, silly smutty romance, but it’s so much more!

What is your favourite new to you or debut author?
A: For this I’d have to choose Akwaeke Emezi who is a new author to me after reading PET this year. I have a few more books by them on my TBR but I’m already in love with their writing style.

B: Definitely Helen Corcoran with her debut, Queen of Coin and Whispers.

What is your new favourite character?
A: I’d have to choose Jack from the Wayward Children series. She was just such a complex character and I’m so glad we saw her in more than one book in the series.

B: I loved Crier in Crier’s War, Caro in The Love Hypothesis and Danika in House of Earth and Blood!

A book that made you cry?
A: I didn’t cry at any books but Summer of Salt by Katrina Leno definitely had some emotional moments that got to me.

B: I think my re-read of Other Words For Smoke made me cry…

A book that made you happy?
A: For this I’d have to choose The Bride Test by Helen Hoang. Not only is it a very cute romance story but it was also important to me to see a romance that features a character with autism and what that means when it comes to sex/relationships. Being autistic myself, it’s always a good feeling to see some of myself in fiction.

B: I feel like I haven’t read any very happy books this year?!

What is the most beautiful book that you have bought?
A: Not a 2020 release but I finally got the Waterstones edition of The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern this year and it is so so pretty. Now to finally read it…

B: I’ve bought a ridiculous amount of beautiful books this year… I just got hold of the original cover of The Song Rising in hardback so I’m gonna say that!

What books do you want to read by the end of the year?
A: I dread this question every year because it makes me accept responsibility for the size of my TBR. So to try and narrow it down to five –
The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee
Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett
Gideon the Ninth
by Tamsyn Muir
A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes
The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar

B: I want to read so many, but high on my list are The Kingdom of Copper and The Empire of Gold.

Lots of Love,
Angharad & Becky

  1. I recently finished reading Deck of Omens and it was great. It’s going to be hard to pick my fav sequel when I get around to doing this tag

  2. I’m really looking forward to reading both of the Brown sister romances! It’s not usually my favorite genre, but they look so cute and fun! I’m glad that people have been super promoting them and getting me interesting, because I don’t haunt the romance spaces so probably wouldn’t have heard about them otherwise. 🙂

  3. Ohmygosh I kinda can’t believe we are midway through the year already! The Bride Test sounds really interesting, and I will have to keep my eye out on that one. Also yes, completely agree with Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – I think I just had MASSIVE expectations for it that fell short!!
