Book Recommendations // Blue Monday

So today, January 15th, is what is officially known as Blue Monday – believed to be the most depressing day of the year. However, this can sometimes be used by the marketing bigwigs in the travel or sales industry to get a bit of money in the till. However, it also allows charities such as Mental Health UK to raise awareness for people who live with depression every day of the year. Becky and I have decided to do our bit by recommending some books that could benefit you, not just today, but any day when you’re feeling a bit shitty.

Remember This When You’re Sad

Recently released on the 11th of this month, this is an ownvoices novel in which the author speaks about her battle with depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, trauma and body image. Maggy lets us relive her experiences with mental illness but also offers hope that we can overcome it. Read Lauren’s review here.

by Matt Haig

If you are living in the UK, Matt Haig is something of a household name when it comes to books on mental health – whether it’s this book marketed as self-help/memoir or his works of fiction – The Humans and How to Stop Time (which I’m currently reading.) Reasons to Stay Alive is a book I think we should all read in our lifetime – Matt tells us his experience with depression and anxiety but also gives us helpful reminders and quote that have stayed with me.

A collection of poetry believed to offer some spiritual help for all manner of things such as loneliness, heartbreak, lack of courage, hopelessness and so on. This book is said to be best consumed when you need it and you will find a poem that suits your situation. The Princess Saves Herself in this One
by Amanda Lovelace

I’ve followed Amanda for a while and it’s no secret that I am a huge fan of hers. Princess was her debut book of poetry and she effortlessly writes about love, loss, grief and most of all, empowerment. The book is split into four sections and come together to form a narrative, ending with the knowledge that we can be our own heroes. Truly a must-read for the poetry-lovers and feminists.
